Living off the grid is when you completely come out of the norms of society and live self sufficiently. The term off-grid refers to not being connected to a grid, mainly used in terms of not being connected to the main or national transmission grid in electricity. Being self-sufficient is using nature and natural resources around to survive off the land. Living off the grid does not require any radical lifestyle adjustments. Off the grid means generating your own electricity, storing it for usage during peak demand, and eliminating your electricity bills. Drilling your own well is an absolute necessity for thriving off the land. When living off-grid people do not rely on municipal water supply, sewer, natural gas, or electrical power. Like the pioneers did when they established this country. They had know technology and used their innate skills to survive and maintain by using the land, cultivating it, and thriving on it.

Water SupplyWater sources can include a well, stream, or lake. There are different techniques used while drilling for water. Find out what would be the best method and get off the municipal water supply, they are poisoning our waters with fluoride, arsenic, pharmaceuticals, feces and urine, I don't think it's fair to have to pay for that, that's gross! Depending on the water source, once you find water you will need pumps and/or filtration systems installed, but it is not necessary if you know how to filter or pump your own water. Rainwater can also be harvested through various outlets. Catching rainwater can provide you with a reservoir so you can obtain water for other uses, that won't effect your main water supply.
Solar PowerSolar power is the conversion of sunlight into electricity, either directly using photovoltaic (P.V), or indirectly using concentrated solar power (C.S.P). Concentrated solar power systems use lenses or mirrors and tracking systems to focus a large area of sunlight into a small beam.

The next step in becoming self-sufficient is to learn how to garden your homestead. This takes a lot of time and care if you want a great harvest and the pleasure in knowing you completely provide fresh organic fruits and vegetables for yourself and family.
The day before you plant, water your garden thoroughly. Start planting by reading the back of the seed packet to ensure you understand the planting depth and seed spacing. Seeds planted too deep or too close together will not do well. Be sure to place a marker at the end of each row with the name and variety of seed you have sown. If you change varieties in the middle of a row, place a marker there too.
Stretch a string between the two stakes you set to mark the row and create a V-shaped furrow with the corner of your hoe. Make sure the depth of the furrow corresponds with the planting depth recommended on the seed packet. Tear the corner of the seed package and carefully tap the package as you move down the row, dispensing the seeds evenly. Larger seeds can be placed individually in the row at the appropriate spacing. Plant some extra seeds in each row to allow for failed germination. You can thin these out later if needed.
When you cover the seeds, make sure the soil is fine, with no large clods or rocks. Pack the dirt lightly over the seeds. After you have finished planting all of the seeds in one section, water the garden thoroughly using a gentle spray so you soak the ground, but don’t disturb the seeds.

Electrical power can be generated on-site with renewable energy sources such as solar, wind or geothermal; with a generator and with adequate fuel reserves.

The thought of raising farm animals is exciting, and challenging to say the least, just think, you will take part in providing nourishment to your family from your own brow. When starting this venture keep in mind what it entails in keeping farm animals. You will have to make sure you feed them, provide proper shelter, and keep them safe and secure. Knowing the type of animals you would like to raise is important as well. You should always start with a small amount that is manageable for you. You may always expand later once you've learned the basics. Here are a few things to remember when you are raising farm animals:

Make sure you have solid-wood fencing for large animals, with a "hot wire" (that gives a small electrical shock) for keeping the heavy stock from damaging the fence. Smaller animals generally need a simple, small enclosure with sides high enough to keep them inside. Cattle should have access to pasture land, and all the animals should have the ability to find shade during the day.
Use a system of identification for large farm animals. Branding has been a common way of "marking" stock, but most people now prefer to use ear tags, and some farmers also microchip their stock,we don't recommend this method. Many farmers do not bother to identify the small animals they raise, such as chickens, but these can be tagged (a band around the ankle for example).
Buy feed specially developed for your animals. Beware of "cheap" feed, consisting mostly of filler. instead purchase a high-quality product to help keep your animals healthy. Provide plenty of clean, fresh water for the farm animals. If you need to fill troughs or containers remember that large animals need approximately 12 gallons of water per animal, per day. Keep several shallow pans of water available for small farm animals and monitor them closely during the day for replenishing

Securing Your Homestead!
Many people can’t put a price tag on their feeling of independence once they start living off the grid. After all, when you produce your own power you never have to worry about blackouts, or what you’d do if you lost power because of a terrorist attack. You’re able to take care of yourself. Security will be among the first things you do while living off-grid. Always be sure to keep all important documents, money, jewelery, rare items, and firearms locked away in a safe in your home. It will be detrimental to your family's well being if these items aren't secure but accessible to your family. Keeping a safe is another way of living off grid because only you are controlling and monitoring the whereabouts of your money. As stated before, keeping proper firearms with firearms training will be key to you and your family's safety. Every home should at least hold a 22 semi automatic rifle, a 12 gauge shotgun, and a 22 or 38 or 9 millimeter pistol to secure the protection of your property and family. There are a number of things you should purchase to protect your home as always you want to have good quality and heavy duty devices when protecting your home:
Use a solid core or metal door for all entrance points
Deadbolt lock with a one-inch throw bolt, knob-in-lock set with a dead-latch mechanism
Four-screw, strike plate with 3-inch screws to penetrate into a wooden door frame
A wide-angle 160° peephole mounted no higher than 58 inch
Use a secondary blocking device on all sliding glass doors
Anti-lift devices such as through-the-door pins or upper track screws
Highly visible alarm decals, beware of dog decals
Secure all accessible windows with secondary blocking devices
Block accessible windows open no more than 6 inches wide
Block anyone from reaching through an open window to unlock the door and or remove the blocking device
Use anti-lift devices to prevent window from being lifted out

The Final Thought!
It's important that we become self sufficient for our own survival! Things aren't handed to you, we have to work for each and everything we get. It is our duty to take care of ourselves. We have been spoiled by the handouts of the government, thus relying on them for our every need. We have to pull up our boot straps and take care of our self by "any means necessary". How do we go about doing that is by slowly removing yourself from the luxury of amenities. Producing your own electric, digging a well for your own water, growing your own food and raising your own livestock will be just the beginning of what it takes to become self sufficient. It is a mind set you have to be determined to have, freedom over security!
